Title: Women Hold Up Half the Sky? Gender Identity and the Wife’s Labor Market Performance in China Speaker:Bin Ye, Zhejiang University Host: Zhang Lan, Associate professor, RIEM, SWUFE Time: 14:00-15:30, Dec. 30, Friday Venue: Yide building H503, Liulin Campus Abstract: In this paper, we empirically study the impact of gender identity on the wife’ labor supply in China where high women employment rate and large population holding the traditional gender identity coexist. We find that the wife’ gender identity affects her labor force participation only for those born before 1978, and it affects earnings for all employed women except those rural wives born before 1978. The husband’s gender identity affects his wife’s labor force participation for both women born before and after 1978; and it affects the earnings of wives except those urban wives born after 1978.
