The Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM) follow management and economics programs at premier universities in North America. RIEM’s coursework uses (original edition) English-language textbooks, is taught entirely in English, and boasts a faculty comprised only of those who hold doctorates from well-established universities. RIEM’s doctoral program aims to educate high-quality talents with strong backgrounds in economics and management. Graduates of the program are able to solve practical problems by using modern methods of economic analysis.

Specific Goals

1. Master modern economic theory, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical economics, and econometrics. Learning and being trained in these basic theories provide a solid foundation for the students to continue their studies and conduct further scientific research. Be a professional academic research person with the international mainstream economics research way. Have the capacity to publish paper in the famous academic journals.

2. Become high-level and creative talent with development of system of professional knowledge, which can teach in the high-level university related field, which are familiar with China's national conditions, and can apply the theory analysis to study and resolve the actual problem.

Program Structure

A. Open ONLY to full-time students (adheres to the “credit hour” system)

B. Advising and Mentoring System

In principle, doctoral students should be advised by RIEM professors. Doctoral students can either choose to have only one supervisor from RIEM, or they can choose to have a secondary supervisor from RIEM or another institute; that is to say, they have the option of having two advisors.

C. Course Instruction

This program emphasizes educating students in initiative and creativity. The teaching style is heuristic, and uses discussion and debate. Additionally, its other teaching methods pay attention to training in both research and fluid expression abilities. In order to strengthen their theoretical foundations, students are encouraged to read widely, especially in pioneering, overseas-related research literature and data in their respective fields of study.

D. Research Training

Research training aims to teach students how to take initiative in creatively studying and researching. Students are trained in conducting research; this includes taking the course “Economics Research and Practice.” Students also write monographs and course theses, attend domestic and overseas academic conferences, and more.

E. Social Practice

Social practice combined with scientific research and graduation thesis, mainly includes related to scientific research of statistics survey, data collection, access, etc. Students can obtain the social practice credits after qualified.

Length of Studies

For a student who already holds a master’s degree from an accredited university, the program typically takes four years to complete (but is flexible). Students are allowed a maximum of six years to complete their studies and graduate.

Graduation and Degree Requirements

Doctoral students must complete a maximum of 66 credits and a minimum of 50 credits. The credit structure is as follows.

2. Mid-term evaluation

Mid-term evaluation should be in the end of fourth semester. Students should complete all the courses to get required credits.

Submit the mid-term evaluation report and opening proposal. Students can start to writing graduate dissertation if they are qualified in mid-term evaluation.

3. Research Training

PhD students should complete required research training before thesis defense which include:

A. Present at an academic research conference. Every year, RIEM will organize an academic research conference. During this event, students have to present articles to an assembled group. (2 credits)

B. Term Paper. Under the guidance of their respective supervisor, students should complete at least one academic paper during the second academic year. (2 credits)

C. Publish an academic paper. Student can obtain 2 credits if they publish an article in academic journals which are listed in the “SWUFE Academic Journals Hierarchical Catalogue (2013).” (Optional)

4. Social Practice (Optional)

This part is optional for international students. Graduate students must actively participate in social practice. Students should submit internship report and the certification from employer by the end of the internship. Students can obtain the social practice credits after qualified by our institute.

5. Academic Degree Dissertation

A. Time and Workload: After earning enough credits, doctoral students (under the guidance of their respective advisors) will conduct literature reviews and thesis proposals. They should complete these literature reviews and thesis proposals during their third year. The literature reviews and thesis proposals are worth 2 credits while the dissertation is worth eight credits. The literature review and thesis proposal must be submitted at least 12 months prior to the student’s preliminary thesis defense.

B. Requirements for the Thesis Topic: The topic of the thesis should focus on pioneering academic, international research and be closely linked with practical problems.

C. Thesis Proposal: Papers must have preliminary conclusions (hypotheses). After completing their preliminary reports, doctoral students can engage in actively receiving feedback. The student becomes a doctoral candidate after passing the preliminary report review. In principle, a doctoral candidate only focuses on writing his or her doctoral thesis and no longer takes elective courses. The College Graduate Training Committee will assemble a committee to review the doctoral dissertation as well as be present for the student’s dissertation defense. The doctoral dissertation defense committee is composed of three or four RIEM professors in addition to two outside experts.

D. Dissertation Writing: The doctoral thesis should be completed individually and in a timely fashion; additionally, it should be completed under the guidance of the student’s advisor. The thesis should reflect the author’s solid theoretical foundation, skilled application of professional knowledge, and potential to creatively contribute in his or her field of study.

A doctoral thesis can discuss several topics in the same field, or can encompass a variety of themes (provided that they are all relevant to the research). Students can separate the topics by using a chapter format, or by having distinctive, separate sections. Quality papers, in principle, have a minimum of 40,000 words.

E. Dissertation Review: The dissertation should be reviewed by at least five reviewers. After passing review, students can participate in the defense.

F. Dissertation Defense: Details information reference relevant regulations. The defense process should follow the announcement from RIEM’s academic office.

2. Mid-term evaluation

Mid-term evaluation should be in the end of fourth semester. Students should complete all the courses to get required credits.

Submit the mid-term evaluation report and opening proposal. Students can start to writing graduate dissertation if they are qualified in mid-term evaluation.

3. Research Training

PhD students should complete required research training before thesis defense which include:

A. Present at an academic research conference. Every year, RIEM will organize an academic research conference. During this event, students have to present articles to an assembled group. (2 credits)

B. Term Paper. Under the guidance of their respective supervisor, students should complete at least one academic paper during the second academic year. (2 credits)

C. Publish an academic paper. Student can obtain 2 credits if they publish an article in academic journals which are listed in the “SWUFE Academic Journals Hierarchical Catalogue (2013).” (Optional)

4. Social Practice (Optional)

This part is optional for international students. Graduate students must actively participate in social practice. Students should submit internship report and the certification from employer by the end of the internship. Students can obtain the social practice credits after qualified by our institute.

5. Academic Degree Dissertation

A. Time and Workload: After earning enough credits, doctoral students (under the guidance of their respective advisors) will conduct literature reviews and thesis proposals. They should complete these literature reviews and thesis proposals during their third year. The literature reviews and thesis proposals are worth 2 credits while the dissertation is worth eight credits. The literature review and thesis proposal must be submitted at least 12 months prior to the student’s preliminary thesis defense.

B. Requirements for the Thesis Topic: The topic of the thesis should focus on pioneering academic, international research and be closely linked with practical problems.

C. Thesis Proposal: Papers must have preliminary conclusions (hypotheses). After completing their preliminary reports, doctoral students can engage in actively receiving feedback. The student becomes a doctoral candidate after passing the preliminary report review. In principle, a doctoral candidate only focuses on writing his or her doctoral thesis and no longer takes elective courses. The College Graduate Training Committee will assemble a committee to review the doctoral dissertation as well as be present for the student’s dissertation defense. The doctoral dissertation defense committee is composed of three or four RIEM professors in addition to two outside experts.

D. Dissertation Writing: The doctoral thesis should be completed individually and in a timely fashion; additionally, it should be completed under the guidance of the student’s advisor. The thesis should reflect the author’s solid theoretical foundation, skilled application of professional knowledge, and potential to creatively contribute in his or her field of study.

A doctoral thesis can discuss several topics in the same field, or can encompass a variety of themes (provided that they are all relevant to the research). Students can separate the topics by using a chapter format, or by having distinctive, separate sections. Quality papers, in principle, have a minimum of 40,000 words.

Length of Studies

For a student who already holds a master’s degree from an accredited university, the program typically takes four years to complete (but is flexible). Students are allowed a maximum of six years to complete their studies and graduate.
