The following is based on the State Council’s Office of Academic Degrees committee on strengthening academic degrees’ work ethics and opinions on the construction of academic requirements. In order to further strengthen the quality control of graduate degrees as well as prevent the occurrence of fraudulent academics dissertations, SWUFE has adhered to the “Academic Misconduct Literature Detection System” to test graduates’ degree theses since 2010. This policy is formulated in the below sections.
Testing Organizations
The detection system is centrally managed by the university library. The testing results are provided to SWUFE’s various academic departments and training colleges.
Submission Requirements
1. Testing is only conducted on graduate degree theses to detect instances of academic misconduct.
2. Submission requirements:Electronic Edition Final Thesis (doc or PDF file); a thesis named in the format of name-student number-经管院.doc (for example: Juan Cheng-11302010999-经管院.doc) cover sheet, directory, copyright, acknowledgements, postscript, etc.
Testing Procedures
1. The first test is free of charge. Subsequent tests will have a fee of 50 RMB. It is provided to doctoral students free of charge and testing is arranged through the library before they begin their pre-defense procedures. Master’s students also receive free testing, and will submit their papers to the library to be returned the next day.
2. In cases other than doctoral and master’s students theses, there may be a 50 RMB fee for testing that will be used to maintain the system and cover related testing expenses.
3. Doctoral students are required to pass testing before they can begin their pre-defense procedures.
4. For master’s theses, the Colleges can arrange for a reviewer to inspect the paper after receiving the testing result.
Testing Results
The detection system will automatically generate a test report form with the test’s details. While detection of academic misconduct is a technical job, the system’s preliminary screening only provides basic testing result. The author is responsible for the consequences arising there from paper himself. If a student provides examination papers and drafts of papers that are inconsistent or deemed fradualent, then the student is responsible for the consequences arising thereafter.
1. Doctoral Theses Requirements
Detecting a text copy rate of less than 10% is considered as passing and a student can be allowed to apply for a degree after consulting with his or her advisor.
Detecting a text copy rate of greater than 10% is deemed as failing the test and the student shall not be allowed to apply for a degree. You should revise the paper and submit it for one additional test. (Most of the time, the student will have a maximum of two weeks to modify his/her paper). If the text copy rate exceeds 10% twice, then the student will be required to wait for six months before resubmitting the paper to be tested again.
2. Master’s Theses Requirements
Detecting a text copy rate of less than 15% is considered as passing. Colleges are allowed to arrange for the paper review.
Detecting a text copy rate of greater than 15% is deemed as failing the test. Colleges are not allowed to arrange a paper review. Graduate theses need to be modified (within a window of one week) and approved by the academic degree’s Evaluation Committee before applications can be submitted for testing again. If the text copy rate was greater than 15% three times, the student will be required to wait for an additional six months before resubmitting the paper to be tested again.
