About the University

The University of Birmingham was established by Queen Victoria by Royal Charter in 1900 and was the UK's first civic or 'redbrick' university. The first phase of building work on the campus was completed in 1909 under the auspices of the esteemed architect Sir Aston Webb. The University is part of the prestigious Russell Group; our thriving student population enjoys a wide range of courses, and exceptional campus and research facilities. More than 100 years on, Birmingham campus has grown to 672 acres, and it now have a campus in Dubai. Each year, the University welcome more than 30,000 students from across the world. The 10 Nobel Laureates among its staff and alumni have contributed to some of science's greatest discoveries, including in recent times the Higgs Boson and Gravitational Waves.

  • In The Times and The Sunday Times 2021 Good University Guide, Birmingham is ranked 19th out of 121 universities surveyed.
